Strategic Planning Members' Survey Results
February 4, 2010
Kentucky Gateway Museum Center begins a new strategic plan this year. The 2010 - 2012 plan was approved by the Board of Trustees after much discussion and an analysis of KGMC’s mission and organizational goals. Focus groups with staff and trustees, and a membership survey were essential to this new plan. Especially the members’ survey! A short survey was sent to 960 past and present members. Staff and trustees hold the belief that the organization is here to support the community, and in order to do this, it is vital to know what the community needs to support the institution. Their answers were used to help develop a strategic plan that would meet our members needs and give voice to their concerns. Survey Results
The following letter was sent to 960 present and past members in August of 2009.
Dear Member,
2009 is a big planning year for the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center. This year we plan for the next three years, 2010 – 2012 (and beyond) – and we need to get it right!
We ask you for support in every mailing we send to you. This one is no different. Except this time we are only asking for your thoughts – we need your review and opinions. How are we doing a year and a half after opening the new addition? Did we over promise and under deliver, or are we on the right track? We are grateful for your membership and value your input.
How can YOU participate in KGMC’s strategic planning process? You can participate in the strategic planning process by providing written feedback to the nine questions listed in the included survey. The information gathered in focus groups and the membership surveys will better enable us to take the necessary actions to make sure KGMC is the cultural institution you need it to be.
Public Service
Museums, in the broadest sense, are institutions which hold their possessions in trust for mankind and for the future welfare of the human race. Their value is in direct proportion to the service they deliver.
This commitment to service is derived from nineteenth-century notions of the advancement and dissemination of knowledge that informed the founding documents of America's museums. George Brown Goode, a noted zoologist and first head of the United States National Museum, declared in 1889:
“The museums of the future in this democratic land should be adapted to the needs of the mechanic, the factory operator, the day laborer, the salesman, and the clerk, as much as to those of the professional man and the man of leisure. . . . In short, the public museum is, first of all, for the benefit of the public.”
Education and Scholarship
Museums serve society by advancing an understanding and appreciation of the natural and cultural common wealth through exhibitions, research, scholarship, publications, and educational activities. These programs further the museum's mission and are responsive to the concerns, interests, and needs of society.
KGMC’s mission: The Kentucky Gateway Museum Center educates visitors by offering dynamic collections, exhibits, and a genealogical-historical library.
We need to make sure that we are fulfilling our responsibilities in both of these areas, Service and Education and Scholarship. Please help us to make KGMC all it can be.
Thank you for your commitment to the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center. Please help us to remain “Our Window to the Past, and Bridge to the Future”.
Sincerely,
Dawn Browning
Director
