NEW HARMONIES: AMERICAN ROOTS MUSIC

The Kentucky Gateway Museum is pleased to host the new Smithsonian traveling exhibit:
New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music is in our Exhibits Gallery running from June 21st through August 3rd. The exhibit has been made possible in Maysville, by the Kentucky Humanities Council, Inc., Hayswood Foundation, and the Limestone Youth Orchestra.
New Harmonies is part of Museums on Main Street, is collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the Federation of State Humanities Councils. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and The Hearst Foundation. The shipping of this exhibit in Kentucky is provided by the Kentucky Department of Transportation.
EVENTS
On
July 10th at 7:30 p.m. Richard Domek, UK professor of music will present “Fascinating Rhythm: Ragtime and Stride Piano” at the Maysville Auditorium. A “Hootenanny” will be held at the Washington Opera Theatre on July 12th at 8 p.m., reception before the program will be held in the Museum Center at 6:30 p.m., featuring Roger Cooper, Lewis County fiddler, The Clack Mountain String Band and the Broadway Six gospel singers. An ice cream social will be held at the KGMC at 1 p.m. on July 13th followed by a program by the Scottaires at 2:30 p.m. and on July 24th Kentucky Humanities Chautauqua performer Sandy Harmon will bring the story and songs of Lily May Ledford to the museum at 7:30 p.m. All performances are free and open to the public.

THE BIG READ COMES TO MAYSVILLE!

June 16, 2008—Maysville—Kentucky Gateway Museum Center today announced

that it has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to host The Big Read in our area. Kentucky Gateway Museum Center is one of 208 libraries, municipalities, and arts, culture, higher education, and science organizations to receive a grant to host The Big Read from September 2008-June 2009. Our Big Read partners are the Mason County Library, Maysville Community and Technical College, and Retired Service Volunteer Program. Area libraries and school systems will be participating. The Big Read gives communities the opportunity to come together to read, discuss, and celebrate one of 23 selections from American and world literature. The Big Read will focus on Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence. Activities will begin this fall in October.

The fund raising event included dinner and antique auction. Proceeds support the operating expenses and preservation projects of the Museum Center.

Actually, it’s not, but the Maysville and Mason County Library, Historical and Scientific Association is! The history of the Association is fraught with change, but that only means that it is also fraught with growth. The history of the Association…and therefore of the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center…could be…and is… somewhat confusing, but actually, it’s not!
